What is included in the TOEFL ITP® Plus for China Solution?

The TOEFL ITP® Plus for China Solution consists of the pre-existing TOEFL ITP® written exam and the Vericant Speaking Interview (provided by Vericant Verified Video Interviews).

What can students expect during the TOEFL ITP® Plus for China Solution Vericant Speaking Interview section?

For students applying to higher education institutions (universities and above), the Vericant Speaking Interview will be a behavior-based interview. Test-takers will be interviewed by a highly-trained native English speaker in a 1-on-1 setting. Interviews typically last between 12-15 minutes.

Behavior-based interviews focus on your past experiences and are conversations that revolve around your interests and experiences. Rather than testing your knowledge in all areas, our interview questions focus more on helping students reveal more about their personality and interests, and understanding how students handle themselves when they are faced with success or challenges.

For students applying to high schools, the Vericant Speaking Interview (as part of the TOEFL ITP® Plus for China Solution) and the Vericant High School Interview are identical. For more information about this interview, please visit https://vericant.cn/en/about-the-interview-en/As a result, Vericant will charge an additional interview fee of RMB 2288. For this fee, you will receive Vericant’s High School Interview Standard Package, which will allow you to send your results to 8 partner schools. An option to upgrade the package is available should you need to send your results to more than 8 schools.

When will openings for the Vericant Speaking Interview be released?

The Vericant Speaking Interview will be available for sign-up on Sundays, two weeks prior to the interview time.

How many kinds of Vericant Speaking Interviews are there?

There are two forms of the Vericant Speaking Interview that students can choose from:

For students applying to higher education institutions (universities and above), the Vericant Speaking Interview is conducted online via a secure video or in-person at various locations in China.

For students applying to high schools, the Vericant Speaking Interview is only conducted in-person at various locations in China.

When and how should I schedule my Vericant Speaking Interview?

Students will receive an email from Vericant 7 days prior to their TOEFL ITP® Plus for China Solution Exam test date to schedule their interviewThe email will contain their Vericant Speaking Interview account and password. Please visit https://registration.vericant.cn/#/toefl-itp and use the login information provided to you to log in and schedule your interview.

For students applying to higher education institutions, please select “undergraduate” or “graduate” depending on the level of program you are applying to, and then choose “on-site” or “online”.

For students applying to high schools, please select “high school”, and then choose “on-site interview”.

*Please note: Should you select the incorrect type of interview and need to change the interview type, an additional processing fee of 300 RMB is required.

What do I need to do before the interview to prepare if I schedule an online Vericant Speaking Interview?

  1. Ensure you have a good internet connection.
  2. Please conduct your interview in a closed and quiet room, ensuring that there is no one else in the room with you. Should the environment of your interview not meet our standards, the interview will end and you will forfeit your opportunity to interview during this scheduled time.
  3. Be sure to have a set of earphones with microphone capability.
  4. Laptop or desktop computer with a camera (smartphones and tablets are not allowed).
  5. Test online meeting platform and troubleshoot prior to the interview (we recommended to test this program at least 2 days before the interview).
  6. Prepare to have your ID on hand
    1. Students from China must use their valid Residence ID Card.
    2. Students from Hong Kong (China) and Macau (China) must use a valid Hong Kong or Macau ID Card/Hong Kong or Macau Residence Permit OR Hong Kong or Macau Passport.
    3. Students from Taiwan (China) must use their original Taiwan Resident Mainland Travel Permit or their original Taiwan Residence Permit.
    4. Students who are not Chinese nationals must use a valid passport.
  7. Turn off all notification sounds on your computer and smartphone (and any other device) prior to the interview.
  8. Enter the meeting room 15 minutes before the interview.

Do I need to register for an online meeting platform account? Where can I find the link to the online meeting?

I have scheduled a remote Vericant Speaking Interview, when will I receive the online meeting link?

We will assign your online meeting link no later than 48 hours before your interview. The link is available to view on your student dashboard (www.registration.vericant.cn/#/dashboard). If you have not received an online meeting link within 48 hours before the interview, please email us at toeflitpplus@vericant.com.

How much time prior to the online interview should I enter the online meeting room? What if I am late?

Students must enter the online meeting room 15 minutes before the interview is scheduled to start. If you fail to enter the online meeting room by the start of the interview, you will automatically forfeit the opportunity to interview during that scheduled time. In this case, students will have to repurchase the TOEFL ITP® Plus for China Solution and book another interview time in order to complete their interview.

I have already entered the meeting room and the scheduled interview time has arrived, but the interviewer has not yet entered the meeting room. What should I do?

Please be patient and wait for 5 minutes. If the interviewer does not enter the online meeting room at that point, please send an email to toeflitpplus@vericant.com and a customer service representative will contact you.

What can I do to ensure that the video will turn out well? What will the framing look like in the final video?

  1. Your interviewer will ask you to sit so that your head and shoulders fill the right third of the frame (see picture below). 
  2. Please set up your interview room in a way that you can comfortably position yourself in the frame.
  3. Ensure that there is good lighting so that we can visibly see your face; please avoid backlighting and make sure that your background is clean and there is nothing distracting behind you.

What are some important things for me to know in regard to the in-person interview?

For students who are doing the in-person interview, please bring a valid ID and arrive at the interview location  at least 10 minutes prior to the scheduled interview time.

  1. Students from China must use their valid Residence ID Card.
  2. Students from Hong Kong (China) and Macau (China) must use a valid Hong Kong or Macau ID Card/Hong Kong or Macau Residence Permit OR Hong Kong or Macau Passport.
  3. Students from Taiwan (China) must use their original Taiwan Resident Mainland Travel Permit or their original Taiwan Residence Permit.
  4. Students who are not Chinese nationals must use a valid passport.

When will I receive my results for the TOEFL ITP® written exam and the interview portion? Where do I go to check my results?

For students applying to undergraduate or graduate programs who have completed both the TOEFL ITP® written exam and the Vericant Speaking Interview, both results will be available on your Vericant account 4 business days after completing your last assessment at around 5pm.

For students applying to high schools, because the TOEFL ITP® written exam takes 4 business days to process, and the Vericant Speaking Interview takes 5 or 10 business days to process (depending on your package), your results for both assessments will be available at around 5pm on your Vericant account according to the number of processing days required after completing your last assessment.

You can view the TOEFL ITP® written exam and interview results by simply logging in to your Vericant account.

How can I send the results of my TOEFL ITP® written exam and the interview portion to schools?

You will be able to send the results of your TOEFL ITP® written exam and the interview portion by simply logging in to your Vericant account, choosing the school you want to send your scores to, and confirming your choice. The following two functions can also help you better demonstrate your abilities and interest in a school:

  1. Highlight part of the interview you would like schools to watch first (this feature is only available to students who are applying to undergraduate or graduate programs).
  2. Add a “heart” to your three favorite schools to express your interest in them.

Can the TOEFL ITP® written exam and Vericant Speaking Interview section be sent separately?

No. The TOEFL ITP® Plus for China Solution does not offer the option of sending the results of your TOEFL ITP® written exam and Vericant Speaking Interview section separately. Both results must be sent together.

Will I be able to re-take the TOEFL ITP® Plus for China Solution's Vericant Speaking Interview section individually?

No. Students can either choose to retake the TOEFL ITP® written exam individually or the TOEFL ITP® Plus for China Solution (which includes the TOEFL ITP® written exam and the Vericant Speaking Interview section).

If I take the TOEFL ITP® written exam and Vericant Speaking Interview section multiple times, would I be able to individually choose which TOEFL ITP® written result and Vericant Speaking Interview section result to send to schools?

For students applying to higher education institutions (universities and above), you can choose to combine any result of your TOEFL ITP® written exam with any one of your Vericant Speaking Interview results to send to schools.

For students applying to high schools, you can choose to send any result of your TOEFL ITP® written exam, while the Vericant Speaking Interview result will be sent based on the policy of the school you are applying to.

When is the latest date I would be able to register for the Vericant Speaking Interview?

Registration for the Vericant Speaking Interview will be closed at midnight three days before the interview day. For example, registration for interviews on June 15th will be closed at midnight (12AM/00:00) on June 12th. We recommend you to schedule your interview at least three days in advance.

Can the Vericant Speaking Interview be cancelled or rescheduled?

No.

What do I do if the school I want to send the result of my TOEFL ITP® written exam to is not on the school list?

There are currently over 4,000 universities worldwide on the Vericant platform. If you do not find the institution you need within our platform, please contact us at toeflitpplus@vericant.com to add your respective school.

How many schools can I send my TOEFL ITP® Plus for China Solution results to?

For students applying to higher education institutions (universities and above), there is no limit to the number of schools you can send your results to.

For students applying to high schools, you can send your results to 8 partner schools. An option to upgrade the package is available should you need to send your results to more than 8 schools.

Will there be a score for the Vericant Speaking Interview? Can I see the video of my interview?

For students applying to higher education institutions (universities and above), the Vericant Speaking Interview is not scored and there is no writing portion to the interview. Students will be able to access and see their interview videos in their Vericant account.

For students applying to high schools, the Vericant Speaking Interview (as part of the TOEFL ITP® Plus for China Solution) is identical to the Vericant High School Interview. The interview is scored and also includes a writing portion. Students can access the results of their interview within their Vericant account, but will not be able to see their interview videos.

For students applying to higher education institutions (universities and above), what are the differences between the Vericant Speaking Interview (as part of the TOEFL ITP® Plus for China Solution) and the Vericant University Interview?

For students applying to higher education institutions, the Vericant Speaking Interview (as part of the TOEFL ITP® Plus for China Solution) only includes the video interview portion. On the other hand, the Vericant University Interview includes both a video interview portion as well as a writing portion.

Is there an age limit for the TOEFL ITP® Plus for China Edition Vericant Speaking Interview section?

Yes. Students applying to high schools must be under the age of 17 and students applying for undergraduate programs must be under the age of 22. There is no age limit for students applying to graduate programs.

Can I send multiple test and interview results to the same school?

No, you will only be able to send your test and interview results once to the same school.

How long will the Vericant Speaking Interview result be valid for?

The Vericant Speaking Interview result will be valid until the 2021 application season.

Who will interview me?

Test-takers will be interviewed by a highly-trained native English speaker. Vericant interviews are conducted in strict accordance to standards set by admissions officers.

What are some important things to know for applicants to U.S. high schools who are taking the TOEFL ITP® Plus for China Solution Vericant Speaking Interview?

  1. An additional interview fee of RMB 2288 is required.
  2. Interviews include a writing portion and a video interview portion.
  3. Only in-person interviews are offered.
  4. Students can participate in a maximum of 3 interviews, and there must be an interval of at least 15 days between each interview.
  5. Students will receive a score for their interview and cannot see the video of their interview.
  6. Interview results can be sent to 8 partner schools. An option to upgrade the package is available should you need to send your results to more than 8 schools.
  7. The interview cannot be cancelled or rescheduled.
  8. The interview result is valid until the 2021 application season.

TOEFL ITP Plus for China – Remote Interview

  1. Download Zoom (on laptop or desktop computer with a camera and internet connectivity) and prepare a set of earphones with microphone capability. Test out Zoom by accessing the following link: https://zoom.us/test.
  2. Check your student dashboard for your interview’s Zoom meeting link (this will be assigned to you at least 48 hours before your interview).
  3. Sign in to Zoom 15 minutes prior to your interview and enter the meeting room. Wait for the interviewer to enter the meeting room and begin the interview.

To ensure that your interview goes smoothly, please make the following preparations before attending the interview:

  1. Please bring the ID you used when registering for the interview, as the interviewer will ask you to present the ID to confirm your identity. If you do not have your ID, you will not be allowed to proceed with the interview.
  2. Applicants must use a desktop or laptop computer with a webcam and internet connectivity. The interview cannot be conducted on a tablet or smartphone.
  3. In order to ensure better audio quality, please have a set of earphones with microphone capability ready (you may also use a set of Apple earphones). Before the interview, in order to ensure the audio quality, you must test the microphone on Zoom to ensure that Zoom can recognize the speaker/microphone you are using.

Please also note the following:

  • All interviewers will use https://time.is/ to keep track of time. If you fail to enter the Zoom meeting within one minute after the start of the scheduled interview, you will be considered absent, and you will have to re-purchase the TOEFL ITP® Plus for China solution. 
  • If the interviewer is not in the Zoom meeting room 5 minutes after the start of the scheduled interview, please email us at toeflitpplus@vericant.com.
  • As a reminder, remote interviews will often experience unexpected issues such as those related to internet connectivity and audio connection. In order to minimize these issues, please be sure to use the Zoom test website to ensure the quality of your internet connection and audio/video in advance.
  1. Choose a quiet room that is away from external noise and other interferences to conduct your interview in.
  2. Choose a spot with a background that is clean and does not have any distractions.
  3. When using your laptop or desktop computer, please be sure the camera is on a stable surface when adjusting its angle as to not cause any unintended movement during the interview.
  4. Use a set of earphones with microphone capability during the interview. Be careful of microphone placement, as hair and loose materials from clothes will affect audio quality.
  5. If possible, please use a wired internet connection (through an ethernet cable), as wired internet connections are more stable than wireless networks (through wifi) and can reduce potential internet connectivity issues.
